Pipe Manager

SUPERVISES: All Pipe Department personnel.

Overview of position: The primary function of the Pipe Manager is to give direction and guidance to Department Supervision and work with the MMF OR Final Assembly Managers and Project teams regarding all daily tasks and manning. This position also carries oversight of CAM responsibilities for the cost accounts assigned to the Pipe Department for all projects.

AUTHORITIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the implementation of all production schedules, monitoring and maintenance of schedules in conjunction with Pipe Lead Foremen and Foreman assigned to the department.
  • Provide all the required project metrics to the Director as requested including detailed CPI and SPI numbers with rational, and project specific and all in manning numbers on a weekly basis.
  • Responsible for Purchase Order review and approval for pipe material on all projects
  • Responsible for ensuring departmental participation at all project meetings and liaising between the project team and managers to ensure project goals are met.
  • Ensuring correct construction and inspection procedures are adhered to
  • Responsible for sourcing and distributing of information to Lead Foremen/Foreman/Supervisors.
  • Accountable for monitoring resource levels and the distribution of all pipe labor resources.
  • Assisting with the maintaining of safe working practices and good housekeeping in all areas and ensures Austal’s policies are being followed
  • Ensure that all earned value and rework for all projects is accounted for.
  • Oversee all schedule maintenance for all assigned projects.
  • Liaise with department managers and The Director to resolve all issues related to the Pipe department.
  • Responsible for the departments responsibility  to produce a Quality product
  • Liaise with production Leads to ensure all technical issues with surveying authorities and SOSB are resolved
  • Responsible for the quick closure of CARS and LIENS.  Develop a plan that reduces/eliminates future occurrences.
  • Promotes an environment of continuous improvement
  • Responsible for insuring corrective actions are implemented to prevent recurring issues.
  • Ensure all personnel comply with Austal USA’s Care and Protection procedure.
  • Recommend and implement training to enhance skill and productivity of employees.
  • Accountable for ensuring all Foremen under their control are complying with the Leadership Creed.
  • Promotes adherence to 5S program and responsible for insuring workplace organization is sustained.
  • Provide constant feedback to Foremen/Supervisors regarding: Quality, Cost, Delivery, Safety, Morale
  • Promotes and teaches Lean Methods insuring effective and productive work processes.
  • Spend as much of their day as possible on the vessels
  • Ensures all time keeping responsibilities are processed and allocated daily by 10am.
  • Ensure that company policies and procedures are understood and followed.
  • Provides motivation, maintains morale and minimizes confrontation
  • Review and recommend pay rates in conjunction with Foremen/Supervisors
  • Maintain succession plan.  Identify Key personnel and implement training programs.
  • Maintain excellent communication and relationship with the Pipe Manager of MMF or Final Assembly.  It is imperative that teamwork is maintained at all time between MMF and Final Assembly.
  • All other tasks as assigned by the Director.

Job Requirements

  • A minimum of Ten (10) years experience in shipbuilding or closely related production manufacturing industry required.
  • 5 years previous Management experience
  • Familiarity with US Navy contracts and oversight a plus
  • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent people management skills
  • Sound Knowledge of scheduling format and reports including manning requirements, late starting tasks, late finishing tasks, 60 day look ahead and physical percent complete.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in CPI and SPI measures and knowledge of principles and standards of EVMS required. 
  • Knowledge of Lean Methods and experience implementing these methods
  • Sound computer skills in Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Change Agent (ability to model, influence and accelerate necessary and / or meaningful changes to work processes with the facility to manage toward a desired end result.)
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a Secret Security Clearance.
